Couture will always be a place of experimentation, whispers in our ears Iris van Herpen, as her futuristic looks exited from within an Old World décor at the Mairie du Vème here in Paris. 3D printing, metals, plastic and more, van Herpen’s shapes are as aesthetically pleasing as they are technologically advanced.

This was a plunge into the world of Abyss, between the flesh-tone corals and the liquid depths of a voluminous blue dress and the oil-slick of a black sheath. For the first time, her colours really stood out, the rich metallic blue, the softness of a fleshy coral, heady burgundy…

In creating garments from materials otherwise more suited for art or construction, the designer treats fashion as a science project and throws us into a far future where fabric is not the only way. Are those the technical tools that will lead away from the use of fabric, and as we progress in new materials, bring new ways of wearing? At the applause, I could not help but wonder if her appeal is not just the ultimate fusion of fashion and technology, an edge still beautifully bleeding.
